Over the past 5 years there has been a significant focus on Mining / Earthmoving Industries and Regulative Authorities to mitigate HPI's (high potential incidents), Injuries and fatalities from V2V (vehicle- vehicle), V2P (vehicle to people), V2I (vehicle to infrastructure) interactions.

Terms for mitigation strategies dealing with Administrative and Technological Control Measures to date have been "Collision Avoidance", "Proximity Detection" and "Situation Awareness" with associated HD ("Hazard Detection Devices") technologies, such as GPS, RF, Radar, Ultrasonic, Laser, etc being marketed as Total Safety solutions.
 
It is not to say that these HD devices can not contribute or in some applications (eg underground continuous mining machines) be used as a primary Safety Control Measure, however there are misconceptions that these " (HD) will provide a (total) solution- especially when the primary cause / significant contributing factor of the majority of incidents is a lack of Operator Visibility / "Blind" Areas around machines.
 
Since LSM Technologies highlighted awareness of technologies available for Collision Avoidance to the Australia Mining Industry in November 2008, there is still a growing number of reported HPI’s / Accidents associated with V2P, V2I and V2V interactions.

Between January to July 2011 there has been over 150 HPI’s reported by the Queensland Mines Inspectorate involving equipment collisions- in Queensland Mines alone.

If one was to evaluate the causes of such incidents then more than 90% could be associated with non –conformance to the ISO 5006 Standards for Operator Visibility around machines.

The ISO 5006:2006 Operator's field of view -Test method and performance criteria is the only Standard for Earthmoving Equipment that has been in development for nearly 20 years, became a full standard in 2006 and a recommended (mandatory) Standard in November 2008, and is the only International Standard addressing the issues of Operator Visibility for enhanced Safety.

LSM Technologies presentation will provide an overview of the ISO 5006 Standard and also "food for thought" to assist you in evaluating appropriate Safety Control Measures to mitigate incidents associated with V2P, V2I and V2V interactions.
