A Queensland Coroner has recommended that the Mining Industry adopt Wireless Tyre Monitoring Sensing Equipment after the death of a miner in 2010 due to Tyre Explosion.

Specific recommendations are:
  • Section [97]3. That the industry investigate, and implement within two years, remote, or wireless, tyre pressure sensing equipment to allow operators to monitor tyre pressures from within the cabin of the truck;
  • Section [97]4. That until remote or wireless tyre pressure sensing equipment is introduced for these mine site tyres that the practice of tyre tapping should not be continued, and that accurate, calibrated, pressure gauge should be used to check correct tyre inflation whenever operational requirements dictate that pressures are to be checked

The inherent safety risks associated with managing wheels and tyres on heavy machinery is nothing new to industry Many Operators understand this and have taken proactive action to mitigate such risks by using the latest in Tyre Management / Monitoring Technology.

Over the past few years- and most recently in 2015- there has been several tyre-related incidents and accidents which sadly have resulted in fatalities / Injuries.

The recent  Coroner’s Report investigated the processes for checking tyre pressures using “tyre tapping” and concluded that such method could not accurately determine an under- inflated tyre, which is deemed as such by as little as 4% reduction in the specific tyre pressure.

As anyone involved with managing wheels and tyres knows, maintaining the correct tyre inflation pressures is critical for a safe operation and prolonging tyre life.  However, the job of checking tyre pressures can be a dangerous and laborious task in itself, as it puts you in close proximity to a high pressure vessel, which can be unpredictable.

Some facts of Tyres and correct inflation:

  • According to the AS4457.2- 2008  / ASA4457.1- 2007 a Run Flat Tyre is a tyre operated  at <70 % of the recommended cold inflation pressure- a Flat Tyre means it must be replaced.
  •  Under-inflation causes excessive tyre flexing and heat build-up and is the number one reason behind catastrophic tyre failure, “blow-outs” and / or Tyre Fire.
  • Under inflation also causes accelerated tyre wear rates, uneven wear patterns, heavy steering and increased fuel consumption.
  •  Incorrect inflation pressures will also reduce the all-important tyre “footprint” on the road, resulting in impaired handling,  braking and vehicle control
  • NSW Centre for Road Transport: (International Truck, Trailer and Equipment Conference 2012) "the most common equipment failures recorded were brake and tyre failure or insecure load" with over 23% of Crashes contributed to "Tyre Failure or Fault"

Some facts on Tyre pressure / Temperature Monitoring Systems (TMS):

  • By  embracing and implementing Tyre Monitoring Systems (TMS) as safety controls they have proven to not only reduce the risks of tyre failures and equipment damage but also substantially reduce maintenance costs.
  • A TMSystem can provide “live” Tyre Pressure and Temperature data, with a In-cabin display with operator alerts, wireless reader tool and remotely data collection via web based telemetry for reporting and analysis, there by eliminating the need to spend hours checking  and recording tyre pressures / temperatures with a manual pressure gauge.
  • By implementing TMS technologies, mining, heavy haulage and on- road transport Operators are able to not only improve safety in their operational and maintenance tasks, but also dramatically reduce maintenance costs, extend tyre service life, reduce fuel consumption, improved braking / handling and control- and of course less downtime.
  • Substantial improvements in tyre life and tyre safety can be achieved through a combination of sound management principles, based on dedicated inspections, preventive actions, good operating conditions, improved operator awareness and practices, and management of tyre performance.
